The paintings of Willem van Scheijndel are mostly inspired by other cultures, civilizations and impressions that he has gained during his travels. In 1984 and 1985 he made a first series of works, called Taffeh-paintings. These works are a contemporary interpretation of the ancient world. On this series followed the austere impressions of Turkey and the colourful Barcelona series. The alienation of man from his environment and cultural heritage was in the ensuing Lakotah Country series. In 1990 let Van Scheijndel was inspired by the African interior. After a first series of works which are made on the basis of literature study, visited Van Scheijndel also really Africa. As a result of these travels he made paintings of insects and of the colorful people in Tanzania and Kenya, the Masaï.In 1991 Van Scheijndel made a trip to Poland. The difference in wealth and environment between the Eastern bloc and Netherlands resulted in a response to what Van Scheijndel calls ' the often pretentious in the art of Netherlands '. As a result of this trip came about his series carts and flags as a symbol of his existence and the continuous updating of his philosophy as a result. In the dreary winter days was his recent series summer scenes, in which he beaches and summer dressed women.
