Joan Miró (Barcelona, 20 april 1893-Palma de Mallorca, 25 december 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist and ceramist, coming from Catalonia. He is seen as one of the greatest Surrealists. Miró was awarded the prize for graphic art of the Venice Biennale. In 1958, he was awarded the Guggenheim International Award. He was appointed Honorary Doctor of Harvard University and of the University of Barcelona. In 1979, he was awarded the first ever Medalla d'Or de la Generalitat, the highest award of the Catalan Government.
