Biography of Herman van der Weert

Born in 1957 in Utrecht.
Education: higher school of Arts Utrecht.
Technique: Gouache, Oil Painting/Acrylic, Drawing.

Herman van der Weert combines manuscript and tight forms in collages that are the basis for paintings or screen printing. His practice is to with ten things at once. For practical reasons-paint and ink must dry-but also because image ideas have to mature. He brings recognized classic or natural beauty in one image together with banalities. Greek statues with scraps, birds of paradise with wallpaper, Celtic ornaments with garden gnomes. Van der Weert comments on art by the contrast with kitsch. Uses images that are unequivocal, but intrigues by their incongruity in relation to each other in one work. Defies the viewer thus to solve the mystery.
