Visual artist Peter van den Akker, born in 1949 in Amsterdam, has two courses at the Utrecht School of the arts completed. Currently he lives and works in Kortenhoef, together with the artist Madeleine Mada.
Central to the oeuvre of Van den Akker, the man and his environment. The man he sees not as individuals, but as a universal stature. The artist has a passion for the developments of humanity and is fascinated by the movements people make in space and time. In his work with the relation between the people and the ever-changing world in which they live, expressed, such as shifts in world cultures and changes in architecture, engineering and nature. Music, dance, literature and travel act as sources of inspiration for the artist. Van den Akker has a great interest in different cultures and through making travel and work in other countries, he will get insight into the developments within, and characteristics of these cultures.
With its many techniques on various materials let Van den Akker see that he is a versatile artist. Thus, paintings, mixed media on paper, collages, screen prints, images in Corten steel and ceramic objects such as vases back in his oeuvre. He makes his paintings on canvas with acrylic or oil paint. The works on paper makes the artist with pastel, charcoal, ink, acrylic or with ink or paint painted transparent foils, with which he creates depth in the compositions.
The shapes and colors in the works of the artist often have a meaning or symbolic value and play an important role in the composition of the creation. When the artist to a work begins, he follows not a firm concept what he has figured out in advance, but he lets the painting grow under his hands. There is in the works by Van den Akker always layering. The bulk of his oeuvre consists of different, transparent layers; images from the history, cultures and contemporary motifs, over and through each other. Human figures manifest themselves in almost every work. The different layers illustrate the layering of human action and the different temporalities give the connectedness between different picture elements. The titles of the creations reflect the inspiration, recognition, or emotional experience of the artist with the subject of the work.
